  1. I lived in Athens for 3 months. You have to go shop in the plaka (the outdoor market). Of course go to the Acropolis (parthenon), the ancient agora & if you like museums the National Archeology museum. Just take in Athens, it's such a beautiful city! If you have time to venture outside of Athens, you should check out Sounion temple for the most beautiful sunset in the world or Delphi which has amazing views. Have a wonderful time!
  2. Get to the Acropolis early in the morning (8:00 am) before the crowds arrive and before it gets too hot. Please note that it does not open until 11:00 on Mondays. Use the entrance down by the southern slope, its normally a lot quieter than the entrance by the Propylea where all the coaches drop off. Here you can buy a combined ticket to see the Acropolis, the Agora, and the Temple of Olympian Zeus - all of which are must sees. After seeing the Acropolis, walk through the Agora and out the other side into the Plaka to see the old city, then head towards Syntagma Square and see the Evzone soldiers guarding the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. You can then walk back through the gardens to the Temple of Olympian Zeus and Hadrian's Arch. If you have time, take the metro or a cab to the Archeological Museum to see the "Mask of Agamemnon" and some famous statues. I really wouldn't bother going all the way to Thessaloniki just to see Ataturk's house. The museum is tiny and not too impressive and Thessaloniki is around 6 hours on the train from Athens.
