Request for Greece 10 day itinerary for travel in early June 2008?

Me, my wife and another couple r going to Greece in early June 2008 for 10 days. We are all in the early 30s. Can someone please suggest an itinerary which includes both island hopping and visiting historical monuments. Any travel tips and websites on travel to Greece are also welcome. Thanks in advance for your time and help.

  1. Ten days will let you see SOME of the mainland if you want to see a lot and do some island hopping allow about a month at least! Athens needs about 3 days, and from there you can take day trips to places like Delphi and Sounion, so there's five or six days gone already If you want to island hop then you can take a ferry from Piraeus to most places but these are overnight trips between the islands. If you want to take in Crete (where I live) then allow at least two/three weeks just for Crete! Get a really good map of Greece full size, with all the islands and their position in relation to the mainland shown to scale. Google for 'greek ferries' to get ferry schedules, or 'olympic airlines' or Aegean airlines' for internal flights!
  2. It is a very good time, to start planning your trip, however I honestly think that 10 days is such a short time. June is a lovely time of year to come. First decide if how many days you want to spend in Athens (I suggest a minimum two days). then at least two to three days for little islands, nearby, or you could go to one island and spend the balance of your holiday there. You must decide which islands, you want to go to and then take it from there....
  3. I think if you make a decision on one island you wish to visit you will be able to decide how the island hopping can go from that point From Pireaus e.g You decide Rhodes - so you can hop to Kos - Kalymnos - Nissiros - Patmos If you decide Paros (love that island) Syros - Paxos - Naxos - Santorini check out ferries on Http://www.ferries.gr You need to know what islands are close by each other and how quick you want to do them in 10 days does not leave you much time to relax! Have you thought of hiring a car and doing the mainland? wow - there must be some world record for getting the most thumbs down for innocent answers and I am definitely the winner in this section!! LOL
  4. some tips...delphi is close to athens --so while you're in athens take an overnight to delphi. chios island has historic towns & a ferry which also takes daytrips to turkey as well as other islands greek people holiday in the pelopenesse. you should swim in the sea most days....if not all!!! pack light-- the weather will be warm & you won't need to dress up. also, 10 days is a short time so plan on going back to see things you miss this trip
  5. Check out the “Holidays in Greece” TV Channel at http://www.LiveFromGreece.com, and that site’s Live Webcams & Vacation Rentals Listing section / page
  6. In my opinion, if you want to have relaxing, high quality and relatively cheap holidays you should go to Crete (Chania or Rethymno). Crete has everything: historical sites, old city-centers and castles, AMAZING beaches (like Falasarna and Elafonisi) , rivers, canyons (Samaria), traditional habits, nice things to eat and drink, kind people etc. But actually Crete is so big and there are so many things to see, that you need to stay there a least one week to enjoy it. You will definately need to rent a car, otherwise it's not worth it. Keep in mind, however, that Crete is only a single aspect of Greece. I also agree with Timo M. You can stay for 3 days in Athens and do day-trips to Epidavros of Delphi. From Athens, Pireas port daily leave hundreds of boats to practically anywhere in the Aegean. I would suggest Andros (definately needs a car), Chios (not so good beaches but very beautiful), Lesvos (not so good beaches but very beautiful), Limnos, Syros (not so good beaches but very beautiful), Sifnos, Skiros....and it goes on forever! If you'd ask me, I'd chose Andros and Skiros.
