History. Ancient Greece?

I need 3 examples of Ancient Greek city-states related to why they, or mainly Greek city-states itself, were independent throughout Greek history

1. Macedonia. that's the only answer i have justifiable with reasons.
2. ALL City States were independent. The long lasting ones were Athens Sparta and Rhodes, They were independent as in the Greek mind the best kind of country , the best equilibrated and nearest to human being, was State- City and neither a big one, but, as said Aristotle, one were "every citizen could know any other one". This allowed a direct partecipation to city life and political deicision... And maybe they were true... ;)
